How long does it take to make compost with the tumbler.  And what do you add to the material to help make the compost?

Asked by: pfastige
On average, it takes about three months for a full decomposition, as long as the temperatures are hot and the compost pile stays moist. Nothing is added other than the material you are composting. However, 'activators' like grass clipping and young weeds can help jump-start the composition process. Please check with your local nursery on specifics.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lifetime 60058 Compost Tumbler Black 80 Gallon We bought this model at the Chelsea Flower Show this summer - 2014. Compost decomposed faster than the plastic bin type we have also used, main advantage being that decomposition was much more even and faster, however we are not sure how much to fill it - up to what level does it cease to work as well? Do you put water in it? Compost only went moist [useable] this week November 2014 [6 months]. You have to introduce worms [preferably worms that are ready for turning or they become giddy when rotated!] It would be a good idea to issue instructions / advice on this website [video] or provided with the product when it arrives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still going strong We have had this composter for a few years and it is still going strong. We run a small farm and use this composter a ton. It has held up to lots of abuse and stinky yard waste. We keep an old pan underneath it to catch the nutritious composite that leaks out. It does get pretty heavy to spin when it is full, but I am still able to do it. It is a bit difficult to empty and have to shovel it out, but it is worth it to be able to make our own compost which has 2 benefits. We get to recycle our yard and food waste and the other benefit is the nutrients that we return to our soil. Some of the screws have rusted but still work perfectly. None of the other metal has rusted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great product, superior customer service We purchased our 80 gallon rotating composter when we decided to try our hand at gardening and we have had it for more than 5 years and have been very pleased with it. Because the plastic parts are made of a good quality plastic it has held up to the UV very well. The metal parts do rust, however Lifetime provides replacements at such a minimal cost that you are able to replace those and keep your composter in continued service. Customer service, in my opinion, is superior to many other companies that I have had to deal with in the past. What a great teaching tool in regards to children! They are going to be so amazed when they see it in action.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Subject to rust - especially in Hawai I bought two of these about 3 years ago. they work as advertised and I have produced a TON of compost. The only problem I've had is RUST! Within the first few months I saw rust in several of the metal parts. I tried using 'rust inhibitors' to no avail. Today I have several places rusted through and have concocted ways to make them still work for me. Will be trying to get parts soon.. As a point of record, the warranty EXCLUDES rust - perhaps they KNEW this might be a problem?

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Product at a Reasonable Cost; Terrible Assembly Instructions Now that I finally have it assembled, it seems like a good value for the cost. Difficult to put together though because of the terrible assembly instructions. Nothing but pictures that are not very detailed. You pretty much have to figure it out on your own. My box arrived split at the seams with missing parts, but their customer service did kindly send me the replacement parts at no charge; arrived 4-5 days after I called. Can't recommend until I see how it holds up, but so far seems like a good value for the dollar. I would shop around though and compare other products; look at their users manual online or better yet find one already assembled.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Needs power tools to assemble, hinges slip They don't mention that this cannot be assembled without a power drill--the holes are not pre-drilled, though they supply a bit for drilling the metal legs--and it is utterly impossible for one person to assemble. The print instructions are terrible, leaving out a lot of information (like that certain pieces must face a specific direction), and the online videos only partly helpful. Once it's assembled, the lid tends to slide sideways on the hinges when you flip it open, so you have to re-align it to get it closed. I have no idea yet how well it actually composts things; as much as it cost and given the hassle of assembling it, it better do an amazing job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Huge capacity! I received this item as a gift. It was easy to put together with a cordless drill set on low (so the screws wouldn't strip the plastic parts) and a little time. My wife and I have been adding compost material for months with plenty of room to spare. We could probably put more than a years worth of kitchen scraps in it. I would definitely recommend this unit. The only minor issue I had was the tiny pin to hold the larger pin open so you can spinthe unit broke off. I just pull the larger pin out further now. Still works like a charm. Rated 5 out of 5 by from The 80 Gallon Rotating Composter While I’m impressed with the 80 Gallon Composter, I must admit that I was even more impressed with their customer service. Here’s why. The item arrived in a box which had a HUGE hole. Because of the hole, the assembly manual was missing... So, how could I find out if any parts were missing. I made a quick call to customer service. Immediately their rep showed me how to download the assembly manual while we were on the phone call. From the manual, I was able to identify the missing parts. The next day, the missing parts were in the mail... No fuss, no hassle. When you talk about service, Lifetime ranks up there with the best. Forget five stars... They deserve ten stars!
