It has a UV finish. Any alterations to the bookcase would void the warranty.

It says there are mounted casters (not shown in photos). Are these already fixed or separate (to install). Does the overall height given include the casters or just the bookshelf itself?

When the shelf is place in the middle setting, what are the dimensions of the two inner compartments? I'm interested if it would fit vinyl records (12.375 in x 12.375 in).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect size bookcase for a reasonable price Nice bookcase for under the window (residential, not school). Had a hard time finding one wide enough but low enough without spending much more; this does the job and does not look like it belongs in a kindergarten class. Easy enough to assemble for this granny, but it was necessary to install the front casters an inch or so back from where the instructions indicated so that they could fully rotate and not bump up against the front 'skirt'. I also needed a hole starter for the caster screws, even though they are supposed to be self-drilling. And the overall height of the piece, including casters, was in fact a couple of inches lower than advertised. All in all though, I'm very pleased with it.
