BUYING GUIDE
Find desks that fit both your classroom and your students!

When selecting student desks, start with the total size of the classroom and how it will be used day to day. Measure the full footprint of each desk and allow an additional 10 to 12 inches for students to sit comfortably and move in and out of their seats. Be sure to plan for clear aisle space so students and educators can move easily throughout the room without congestion. Thoughtful spacing not only improves comfort but also supports safety, accessibility, and smoother classroom flow.
Desktop size and shape matter just as much as the room layout. Desktops are available in a wide range of configurations, so it is important to confirm that the surface area can accommodate textbooks, notebooks, laptops or tablets, and any other materials students use throughout the day. A properly sized work surface helps students stay organized and focused, especially in classrooms that rely heavily on technology or hands-on learning.
Desk durability is largely determined by the steel frame, which is measured by gauge. Lower-gauge steel indicates a thicker, stronger frame that is better suited for daily use in busy classrooms. Choosing desks with sturdy construction helps extend product life and reduces the need for frequent replacements.
Stability and flexibility features also play a key role in long-term usability. Self-leveling glides keep desktops even on uneven floors and prevent annoying wobble that can distract students. Desks with locking casters offer added flexibility, allowing educators and students to quickly rearrange learning spaces to support different teaching styles, group work, or testing setups.
Open front desks with built-in storage are a great option for early elementary classrooms or grades without lockers, helping students keep supplies organized
To account for growth spurts during the school year, consider choosing a slightly larger desk size so students remain comfortable through year’s end

Product Types
Desks with storage keep work surfaces free of personal belongings and allow students easy access to extra supplies. They also help minimize locker visits between classes. Plastic book boxes come in many colors and help reduce noise when students access materials inside. Metal book boxes are the most durable. Wire book boxes give teachers visual access to the contents inside. School desks with storage can also adjust to fit the heights for use in multiple grade levels.
Collaborative desks are designed for both independent and shared work. Shapes like boomerang and trapezoid make it easy for students to fit their desks together to create small groups. Special features like casters and whiteboard tops allow for flexible classroom arrangements for group work.
Most whiteboard desks are designed for both individual student use and for group collaboration. They encourage note taking and idea sharing without extra paper or posterboards. Students can use dry erase markers on their desktop to draw, problem solve and jot down questions. Desk shapes like bow tie, cog and triangle make fitting multiple desks into one collaborative workspace a snap.
Standing desks can increase focus and engagement for many students. Sit-to-stand desks give students the flexibility to sit or stand while in class.
Mobile desks give students the power to instantly rearrange their workspace. These desks feature durable locking casters for smooth maneuverability and are ideal for classrooms that require frequent rearranging. Mobile classroom desks are available in all sizes and styles, but common features include height-adjustable legs, steel frames and whiteboard or laminate tops.
Desk and chair sets create a cohesive, functional workspace that supports comfort, organization, and flexible learning. By pairing sturdy desks with properly sized seating, these sets help improve student posture, focus, and day-to-day usability while simplifying classroom planning and purchasing. Many styles offer adjustable heights to accommodate different grade levels and student needs, along with built-in storage to keep materials close and work surfaces clear.
ADA Desks meet the requirements set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act and are wheelchair accessible. The design can include a fixed or an adjustable height. The height can be easily adjusted with a knob, hand crank or even a motor.
Multi-student desks give students extra space to spread their work out and work one-on-one with another student. Some can be arranged to accommodate more than two students if placed side by side. For added flexibility, choose a style that has an adjustable height or casters.
