Mobile, Modular, Made to Last: How We Redefined the Reading Nook

Reading nooks must provide a comfortable space for independent learning, but also need to fit within school budgets, support broader learning objectives, and work for a wide range of grade levels and needs if they’re to provide long-term value.

A client came to us with concerns like these when trying to select a nook for an after-school program. A dedicated space to support inclusive and self-paced learning was a must-have, but kids grow quickly, and these structures can be expensive to replace. The current lineup of available nooks wouldn't cut it, so we had to think outside the box to come up with something that can accommodate growing students for years to come without sacrificing budgets or learning benefits.

The Sprogs Mobile Camper Nook emerged as the solution, and the story of its design offers some important lessons for schools looking to get more out of their classroom furnishings.

Kids Grow, Furniture Doesn’t

The Mobile Camper Nook began with an issue: kids grow, but furniture doesn’t. A client came to School Outfitters in search of a reading nook, but many available options were too small. While compact reading spaces work well for younger students, these same children quickly outgrow them, and limited school budgets mean replacing furniture as kids grow is not a viable option.

On the other hand, larger pieces offer more long-term use but introduce shipping and mobility challenges. Moving the nook up and down stairs, through doors, and into different rooms within the school would be difficult if it were too big.

Relatedly, the reading nook had to be mobile. After-school literacy programs and similar events would require moving the structure between rooms and buildings, so it had to be easy to transport for educators to get the most value possible from it, regardless of its size.

Inspired by Nature, Designed to Adapt

As School Outfitters spoke with the client about these challenges, we reviewed some key early learning trends. A few relevant throughlines emerged — biophilic design, flexibility and longevity, and space efficiency. Classroom furniture buying decisions are increasingly driven by the demand for warm, home-like environments, long-lasting, adjustable options, and maximizing every bit of available space.

A reading nook meeting these three goals would fit the need for a shippable, mobile product that can grow as kids do. After consulting with both the client and our manufacturer, we landed on a design that does just that — a large, flexible reading nook resembling a camper.

Biophilic Design

The Mobile Camper Nook centers around biophilic design, incorporating inspiration from nature and the outdoors. Integrating natural elements into school furniture can have a positive impact on student mental health, leading to reduced stress and improved learning outcomes.

Bringing the outdoors indoors can help students focus, and softer, more natural colors support emotional regulation through a calming effect. Even adults can benefit from this kind of atmosphere, but it’s all the more important in an early learning environment.

These benefits of biophilic design are the same drivers behind the growing trend of calming zones and sensory rooms in elementary classrooms. A calmer, more comfortable space fights overstimulation and sparks curiosity to create a more productive learning environment.

While many would look to outdoor areas like playgrounds to capitalize on the advantages of biophilic design, the Mobile Camper Nook lets students experience them without leaving the classroom. We designed the nook to feature a natural Baltic birch finish and to emulate a retro camper for a more outdoorsy feel. Its simplicity and lack of any bright colors further lean into the emotional regulation and curiosity benefits of biophilic design.

Adaptability by Simplicity

When it came to ensuring the Mobile Camper Nook was adaptable, we took things back to basics. Instead of equipping the nook with multiple built-in features, we stripped it to come in a plain finish and no outside attachments.

Early on in the design phase, we experimented with an attachable marker board on the outside. However, we ultimately removed this to leave room for imagination and teacher freedom. The Mobile Camper Nook is versatile by virtue of its simplicity, students can imagine it to be whatever they want and teachers can decorate and customize it however they see fit.

Part of creating a future-ready classroom is accounting for a limited budget. Making furniture more adaptable by streamlining it rather than adding to it means schools can achieve maximum flexibility at a lower cost, so districts don’t need to choose between longevity and affordability.

Easy Assembly

This flexibility also shines through in the nook’s mobility and ease of assembly. Originally, the piece came as a fully assembled whole, but we requested that it come unassembled after receiving the initial design. The client requesting this nook needed something that could easily fit through doors, and School Outfitters wanted to create something that would be easy to ship and move once finished.

Coming unassembled allows for the Mobile Camper Nook to ship flat. On top of making it easier to fit on a delivery truck, this means teachers can move it between classrooms and up stairs without sacrificing size. Once fully assembled, the nook is big enough that students won’t outgrow it, but because teachers can take it apart and reassemble it quickly, it’s still mobile.

Locking casters further add to this mobility. Teachers can wheel the nook around their classroom as they reorganize seating layouts. After-school reading programs can slide it in and out of gyms or other rooms as needed. Whether assembled or in pieces, it’s portable enough to be versatile without being too small for older students.

From Custom Solution to Mainline Product

The Mobile Camper Nook started as a custom solution for a specific client. But the final design turned out so well, and the benefits are so applicable to other scenarios, that it has graduated to become part of School Outfitters’ regular lineup of Sprogs furniture and fixtures.

Any educator looking for something to encourage curiosity and support literacy efforts now has the Mobile Camper Nook as a way to meet these goals. The biophilic, flexible reading nook is ready to integrate into a variety of classroom settings at any age level while keeping things in budget.
