What is the Texas SSES grant program?

The Texas Supplemental Special Education Services (SSES) program awards one-time $1,500 grants to eligible parents or caregivers of students who receive special education services through a Texas public school. Recipients may use funding to purchase educationally relevant products, technologies or services.

The SSES+ Medically Fragile program awards one-time $5,000 grants to students who receive special education services at home or in a care facility and are identified as “medically fragile”. SSES+ recipients may use funding to purchase goods or services that help a medically fragile student access public school and/or health-related services at home.

The SSES program was created to support special needs students impacted by COVID-19. Funds are designed to provide additional support above and beyond public school resources, and are first-come, first-serve.

Who is eligible for a Texas SSES or SSES+ grant?

To be eligible for an SSES grant, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in a Texas public school
  • In PreK - 12th grade
  • Served through special education

If a student enrolled in a Texas public school is identified as medically fragile (defined as having a serious, ongoing illness or a chronic condition that requires daily, ongoing medical treatments) they may qualify for an SSES+ loan.

Is there a deadline to apply for the Texas SSES Grant Program?

The SSES grant program will remain open through the 2023-2024 school year. Currently, there is no deadline to apply, but because funds are first-come, first-serve, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) encourages families to apply as soon as possible.

What can I purchase with an SSES grant?

SSES funds may be used to purchase educationally relevant products, technologies or services. This includes everything from occupational therapy and online classes to tutoring and furniture and equipment for learning.

Examples of SSES-eligible furniture and equipment include:

  • Desks
  • Chairs
  • Sensory tools
  • Headphones
  • Laptops and tablets
  • Speakers

How can I access and use SSES funds?

Purchases with SSES funds can only be made through ClassWallet, an online marketplace with approved program vendors. Grant funds are automatically added to a digital wallet once families are approved. Recipients may then log in to ClassWallet to browse and purchase SSES-eligible products, services, classes and more.

Each purchase request submitted through ClassWallet must be approved by the SSES program. This process can take up to 30 days.

For more information on how to access and use SSES funds in ClassWallet, refer to the Texas Educational Agency (TEA).
